How we ranked this
We sorted every town with a Spainability page by straight-line drive time to the nearest airport we classify as an international hub (not just any regional airstrip) — a simple, reproducible sort, not a persona-weighted score.
- Data Our own town-by-town drive-time and airport dataset, joined to which airports we classify as international hubs.
- Reproducible This is a straight drive-time sort — re-run the same data and you get this exact order.
- What we don't score We rank drive-time to the nearest airport we classify as an international hub — not flight frequency, route count, or how cheap those routes are. A short drive to a hub doesn't guarantee a direct flight to where you're going; check our best-places-for-American-retirees list for direct-route scoring.

Questions
What counts as an 'international' airport in this ranking?
We use our own airport dataset's international-hub flag — larger airports with scheduled international routes — rather than every small regional airstrip. About two-thirds of Spanish towns' nearest airport isn't their nearest international hub, so this ranking is genuinely different from 'nearest airport'.
Is this ranked by our scoring engine?
No — this is a straight sort by drive-time-to-nearest-international-hub, like our census and healthcare-wait lists. It's reproducible from the same data, not a persona-weighted composite.
